In The Beginning :- |
|
| P&M Services (Rochdale) Limited, or P&M as we are more commonly
named, was founded back in 1964 by Husband and wife team Peter and
Margaret Unwin. It was later registered to it's present name in 1965. |

| Funding Thanks to the
Family |
|
An employment dispute combined with the loss of his Grandfather John
Robert, provided both a reason and a means to create the company. To
this day a photograph of the J R Unwin Pawn shop hangs in the office; it
was the source of the money that made it all possible. The other
Director at the startup was Robert Francis Unwin, Peter Unwin's father,
who also helped financially by loaning money into the company.

| Hard Times |
|
Times were hard. Present MD Roger Unwin then aged 5 along with his big
brother David Aged 6 were of little use. [Not forgetting sister Vicky
our current Sales Director aged minus **]. Initially P&M was
even without a phone line, wife Peggy occasionally would take a
message on the home phone, then catch a bus to relay the message to the
works. The family car at the time was a humble Rover purchased for 5
Pounds from the local scrap yard. A sticking carburetor used to
stop it dead almost in its tracks, the then MD would have to jump
out lift the bonnet and employ the use of a small hammer to finish the
journey. It's probably also time to come clean and confess to the true identity
of the original staff called in should a customer be expected. No not
from rent a crowd but non working Director Robert F, or Bob as he liked
to be called, and wife Lois. Devoted parents, it was a 100 mile
round trip, back in the 1960's, no motorways or bypasses to
assist.

| Early Methods of
Production |
| Back in 1987 when he was 81 years young Robert
Francis produced a photograph album dating back to the early years.
Production has changed a bit since then but the best bits can be seen by
following the R.F.B.U. Album
link. Our present industry was truly in its infancy, most equipment was
either home made or borrowed from another industry. Early production
commenced in a converted shop on Ramsey Street in Rochdale. To coat the
laminate with resist we used to fasten the panel onto the end of a small
hand drill, pour a little resist on, and spin it round at high speed to
get a thin and even coating. Televisions with valves had arrived but definitely
no home computers, WWW, or CAD. It was back in the good
old days when we weren't even selecting 'Start' every day in order to
close down our copy of Microsoft windows. |

| Almost the End ?? |
| In later years an unexpected grim time was forced upon the company. A
decision had been made to remain private and resist the attentions from larger company
TDS.
Instead of accepting defeat, desperate for the knowledge and expertise
TDS persuaded key
staff members David Taylor, and Peter Lancaster to form the then TDS Circuits.
Peter Lancaster later moved on to form one of the other early PCB
manufacturers Manchester Circuits, memorably nicknamed 'Mankey
Circuits'. Both were highly successful in their time. |
